La rueda del Hamster (The hamster wheel) is a radio show conducted by Nadia Montero and Arnau Benlloch in Valencia (Spain). This program proposes ‘ideas and skills to drive you to hapiness and inspire you towards the change’. I like listening to the interviewees and when my mind is ready to listen I can process some of the information. One of the programs still in my mind was about reinventing yourself. To do it and to know who you would like to become there is an easy solution: look at oneself and make a terrifying question: ‘What can I do amazingly?’.
According to the expert who joined the program, there’s a way which consists of removing your own layers of self-delusion and self-pity and face your own fears. The answer, if you dare to be really honest, will be there after that huge task although the solution is yet to come.
The nature of my being sucks. I have spent my whole life searching and I am still there. I have no clue about what I want to do, I am in the middle of those layers and, by all means, I don’t know what I really do outstandingly well. But at least I do know something about myself that I’ve never been able to ignore: I can’t lie to myself.
The task is then to keep peeling the onion which will drive me to an uncertain future but may take me away from the current path.
Next question please.

Bubbles
Two weeks ago something extraordinary happened to me.
I am a natural controller and, as I was saying, two weeks ago I got home and I didn’t want to think about anything. I didn’t want to think about the IELTS, our visa stuff, the new job, my friends, how I miss my friends, my family, how I miss my family, the awesome light of Perth, the loneliness, this blog, the English as a second language, me vomiting, the events I have been invited to, that I should go to the gym and I am not going, me not being perfect, the people who drain me.
I got home and I desired to be in a bubble. I’m still there.
Ese simpático teléfono / That friendly phone (Esp/Eng)

That friendly phone
This is my fourth working week and I feel happily exhausted.
I must admit that I didn’t remember how it was preparing lunch for the following day, waking up early to run after the bus or having a computer on the desk waiting for me every morning. I am learning to do a thousand things and, although working shouldn’t be the source of the next statement, I feel useful.
But then the telephone rings and my world falls apart. I believed that I had been understanding English conversations with people I spoke with on the phone, but it seems that I have been making up those conversations. When I pick up the telephone and I reply this friendly ‘good morning (or afternoon), Bego speaking, how can I help you?’ people on the other side just vomit. At least it seems so to me.
Hey, I’m on that, but I’d really appreciate if you could please slow down.
Mi deseo / I wish… ( Esp / Eng)

I wish…
I used to go back home at 11pm after a night shift in the newspaper I was working for. They were intense workdays and there was nothing which could stop my activity brain, incredibly alive after having worked so many hours in a row. I couldn’t stop visualizing columns, page layouts, headlines and news. As if I was a robot, I used to go to the kitchen, prepare a lime blossom and orange infusion while switching the TV on. After that, I used to sit in front of Vicente Vallés, a journalist who would present the night news program at the 24 hours Channel.
I don’t know when I got used to that acid flavor, too much intense at the beginning, which I ended up being hooked to, not only for its effect but also for the ritual I performed: moving the mug from hand to hand to prevent burning myself, sipping and lying on the sofa to leave my mind blank, in front of a TV full of journalistic images which I didn’t care about anymore.
That infusion didn’t make me fall asleep, it did something even better: it allowed me to install myself in a frozen moment, uncommon in my daily routine, where I didn’t miss anything and mostly anyone.
It’s been almost three years without the newspaper, the mug, that relieved feeling and, especially, that flavor. Some friends are visiting us for Christmas from Spain and they have asked me if I want them to bring me something. Spanish Ham, obviously.

Disfrutadlo a tope, amigos. Haré lo mismo en Perth. Para algo estamos en las Antípodas.
Melbourne is lively and vibrant and it feels happy. It can be the good weather. Summer is here, from the 1st of December. Make the most of it, mates. I will do it in Perth. We are Down Under.

Entretiempo. This is a Spanish word that doesn’t exist in English. As I used to live in Melbourne I didn’t use it too often. You don’t need it as you have four seasons in one day and the weather is unstable. However, I live in Perth now and yesterday I was walking back home in the sun when I realized how good I felt. I remembered how I like the entretiempo.
Entretiempo is the time between winter and summer seasons, that is spring and autumn. I prefer spring as plants are blooming, days are warmer and longer, you can almost touch the summer beach days and it’s my birthday (obviously in the Northern Hemisphere).
I’ve looked up for its translation and the most similar word is half-time but it doesn’t do justice to my lovely Spanish word. English speakers, I give it to you for free. Take it. But most of all, enjoy it.
